Music I've Been Listening to Lately
Just what the title says, these are songs I've had on repeat over the past couple of weeks, or maybe even longer.
A quick note: most of the links go to the songs on Bandcamp, but some link to YouTube videos that may have flashing lights. Not all of the songs are on Bandcamp, unfortunately. I've noted which ones lead to YouTube in parentheses.
"Lucky Again" by Lykke Li (YouTube) - One of my all-time favorite musicians. I'm excited for her new album, especially after hearing the first two singles! This one feels like a throwback to her early stuff and also a bit like a classic pop song from the '60s or '70s. I love the production of it.
"Home" by Charlie Puth feat. Hikaru Utada (YouTube) - I've never listened to Charlie Puth before this song, but I saw "featuring Hikaru Utada" and clicked. I've been a fan of Utada's since their song "Simple and Clean" from the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack, and their album Heart Station is one of my favorites. I love the smooth sound of this song, the saxophone, and the Japanese lyrics that both Utada and Charlie(!) sing.
"From The Top" by Epoch feat. Fiona Lynch - After listening to the Paradise Killer soundtrack obsessively for five years, I discovered that Epoch released a standalone album in the same style with musicians he worked with on Paradise Killer. Needless to say, it's my new obsession. It's addictive pop/dance music that's perfect for warmer weather.
"Dark, Silent And Complete" by Unprocessed - My latest obsession in the metal world is Unprocessed, a German band creating really interesting metalcore with elements of pop and prog. This starts out as one of their heaviest songs, but it changes a couple of times, and I love the evolution of it throughout.
"Dream Of King" by Lovebites (YouTube) - A fantastic power metal band who are super fun to watch live, in part because of their incredible guitarist Tatematsu Midori. They're a new discovery for me, so I've only listened to their most recent album, but I plan to check out the rest of their discography soon. Every song on the album is a powerful banger, but this one is probably my favorite.
"To The Last Breath" by Arch Enemy (YouTube) - The latest single from one of my favorite metal bands, but this time with a new vocalist. Their previous vocalist, Alissa White-Gluz, left to form a new band (whose music I'm also very much looking forward to). I was sad to see Alissa go, but I'm loving Lauren Hart's growls and the new song.
"As Good As It Gets" by Katie Gavin feat. Mitski - Katie Gavin's solo album would be right at home on a Lilith Fair stage in the '90s. It wears its influences on its sleeve, and I love it very much. Actually, can Lilith Fair just come back, please? Katie and Mitski would both be perfect headliners.
"Upp Úr Øskuni" by Eivør - This song is like a witch's chant and I adore it. It means "Rise from the Ashes" in English, and the lyrics are about finding strength in sisterhood. It gives me strength when I listen to it. It's fierce and dark and beautiful.
"We've Got You (i - Spark)" by Vienna Teng - I've been turning to this song quite a lot lately amidst all that's going on in the world. I'm just gonna share some of the lyrics here:
we watch you draw their frightened fire
you’re keeping calm you’re aiming higher, it’s
summoning all our best
more power than we knew we hadyeah we’ve got a light
to see our way by
we’ve got what we need
when we’ve got you
we’re not afraid
we won’t break
we’ve got what we need
when we’ve got you
"Hands" by Jewel (YouTube) - Same as above, it's been providing peace and strength.
Poverty stole your golden shoes
It didn't steal your laughter
And heartache came to visit me
But I knew it wasn't ever after
We'll fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what's right
'Cause where there's a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singingIn the end, only kindness matters
